Eilonwy was a high elf that grew to love Adelai and helped raise his son Will after the death of his wife in the wars with the humans. This relationship was not allowed in eleven society as relationships between high elves and wood elves was considered unacceptable. Thus, nothing ever happened from it and the events that occurred during the casting of the change caused the two to fall apart.

In fact it was this event that pushed her to accept the offer to become the fairy mother, believing she had no other way to handle the grief of losing everything she cared about all at once as her interest in Adelai had already made her a pariah in elven society.
